UGENTO Ugento has
distant messapiche origin also testified by the origin of its name,
that according to some researchers comes from the ancient name of the
Jonio sea that was just Ausonium. Today they are still visible the ruins
of the ancient messapica city-state that for manifold centuries it has
kept its importance, also recognized by Rome that won and put it in
the street Traiana, the continuation of the street Appia; the Romans
left tangible traces of their culture, having built to Ugento theatres,
amphitheatres and a small forum. |
